A police officer died and two other people were critically hurt in a crash on the FDR Drive early Saturday, police sources say. 

NYPD sources say the police officer, a 29-year-old man, was driving north in a Lexus near 23rd Street around 2:30 a.m. when he lost control, striking a barrier and a pedestrian footbridge. He died at the scene.

A man and a woman, both 25 years old, were taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, officials said.

A police source said the young man may be a firefighter. The woman sustained a leg injury, the source said.

The FDR Drive was temporarily closed in both directions as a result of the crash. All of its lanes had reopened as of 8 a.m., officials said.
