Art-Making and Discussion with NYC Artists This Summer  

See. Discuss. Create!  Meet famed New York artists Janette Beckman and Daze and make your own artistic works.   

Join these free sessions to see highlights from the Museum’s collections, meet the artists and hear behind-the-scenes stories of their work, and take part in interactive, art-making activities.  

Recommended for ages 7 and older. All ages welcome. Sessions are intergenerational and family members are encouraged to join and participate together.  

Free, registration required. Registered attendees will receive an event reminder.  

Photographing City Life: Live Session with Photographer Janette Beckman  

Tuesday, August 18  at 11AM

Meet the photographer known for capturing youth culture in her photographs of hip hop, punk, New York street life, and the recent demonstrations for Black Lives. Dive into the Museum’s collection to see Beckman’s memorable portraits of hip hop legends before they were famous, among other work, and be inspired to take your own photos. Beckman will walk us through the creative process of how to tell stories through the camera.

City as Canvas: Live Session with Daze, Artist and Graffiti Writer 

Tuesday, September 1  at 11AM 

Meet Daze, a prolific artist regarded as one of the most acclaimed graffiti writers of his time. Daze will share stories about painting New York City subway cars in the 1970s as a student at the High School of Art and Design, and discuss his recent work in painting, sculpture, and public art. Participants will see original works from the Museum’s Martin Wong graffiti art collection. Daze will lead an interactive drawing activity for participants to create their own pieces and designs.
