The convention, now in its fourth year, began as an exciting, new way to showcase New Dorp students’ artwork and to encourage the community to participate in local art and pop culture.
“This event started as a way to have a student art gallery that was a little more exciting. Something a little extra compared to your normal student art galley,” said Vallario.
He said that all the work his students have produced over his 13 years at New Dorp High School inspired him to find a way to showcase the art to as many people as possible.
“We thought that the students were all working so hard, and were so incredibly talented, that we wanted to draw a large audience for them,” Vallario added.
Vallario, a comic fan himself, said he chose a comic convention because of the immense popularity of Marvel superhero movies in recent years.
“By doing the Comic Con we’re able to bring the community, the kids and a lot of local artists together,” Vallario added.
